Super Box Culvert
A monolithic box that goes under the road in a day. Plug-and-socket ends, haunched corners, and 50 sizes up to 3.5 × 3.0 m.
Features
- Designed to IS: 5 T wheel load (T-25), 10 kN/m, with 200 mm to 3000 mm earth cushion.
- Heavier on request: Custom design for IRC Class 70R and other loadings.
- Male & female joint: Cement mortar, rubber gasket or bitumen strip seals; flange bolts hold the line.
- Monolithic box: Four sides and haunched corners cast as one piece.
- A full waterway: A rectangular opening passes more flow than a pipe of the same height, so the road stays open when the nala rises.
- Where it goes: Road crossings, underground storm-water and power ducts, hume-pipe replacement.
- One piece, four sides
- Haunched corners
- The plug (spigot) end
- The socket end
- C-clamp connectors
- Lifting points
- Segment length to suit
Applications
- Nala under a 4-lane highway: The barrel runs across the embankment at 90°, segment after segment; headwalls and 45° wingwalls hold the fill at each end while traffic runs on top.
- Two cells, one crossing: Where one box is not enough, lines are laid side by side, more waterway for monsoon flows under the same road.
- Subway under the railway: Precast boxes replace level crossings: pushed or placed under the track in a block, then road and people pass through.
What it prevents
- Road overtopping: A full rectangular waterway passes more flow than a pipe of the same height.
- Embankment wash-out: Headwalls and wingwalls hold the fill; the barrel carries the water through, not over.
- Settlement & leaking joints: Plug-and-socket joints with gasket, mortar and bolted C-clamps keep the line tight.
- Long traffic closures: Precast segments go in within days, or are pushed under a live railway.
Installation
- Excavate: Across the road line to formation level.
- Foundation: t1 / t2 by span: 110 / 160 (≤1000), 160 / 210 (≤2000), 200 / 250 (≤3000) mm.
- Place & pull: Bed on 20 mm mortar; pull each segment home with a lever hoist.
- Seal & cover: Gasket or mortar the joint, bolt, then rebuild the road on the cushion.
